- Mechanics:
I didn't use technology myself, I read them a chapter from a book, although in a larger class I would prefer to have the book shown on a larger screen so that everyone could see and read along. The students however used Pixie and referred back to both the KWL charts and timelines on Kidspiration.
I planned my lesson so that we would first review the differences between a biography and an autobiography, cover any questions still not answered on the "What to Learn" section of the KWL, and begin writing the autobiographies. When we had close to 30 minutes left, I told the students they could add their finishing lines for the next 8 minutes. After they were done typing, I had them rotate to read their classmate's autobiography. This only took a couple minutes and then I had them share something they learned about their classmate. I then had them go back to their seats and work on their title and cover page. We finished right on time. This lesson was easily adjustable if writing had taken longer- I would have cut out the cover page. If we had even more extra time, then I would have had them read aloud their autobiographies to the rest of us.
