Lesson 3- Phase 1 Reflection

Assessing Prior Knowledge and Planning Instruction

Students need to know everything covered in the prior lessons: difference between biography and autobiography, how to use Kidspiration, how to upload documents to Google Drive, what makes events important. Prior knowledge is assessed by looking at the KWL chart from the first lesson and by going over it again prior to starting this lesson. This way I am able to see what was covered enough and what areas they may need more time discussing.I will use this information to alter my lesson slightly if needed, and engage students in a group discussion going over what is still not understood.
This content should be taught because it is in the grade level standards and this is a step needed when learning different writing styles.
Students are connecting their own lives and world into the lesson which is engaging and helps them become more interested in the activity. I have integrated writing and technology together because I feel that by using the fun program Pixie, students will retain more and take away more from the lesson. Students are engaging in higher order thinking by making the connections between their own important events and what makes them important. One event may be considered more important than it would to someone else due to their life experiences and world view.The assessment for this part of my lesson is measuring if they retained the important elements of an autobiography.

REFLECTION: How does your lesson meet each of the ISTE NETs Standards?
The objective involves the students using technology, publishing/sharing work, and working with peers to create and edit their work. This directly relates to the standard of using technology to use and publish writing and collaborating with their fellow students.This lesson will most likely be towards the middle of the school year. We would spend the first part of the semester going over different technological tools, how to use them, and why they are important. We would also begin with simpler forms of writing such as narratives. 

Designing Instruction (InTask Standards 7 and 8):Reflection: Planning Assessment (InTask Standard 6):
1.      My lesson meets Standard 1 by involving students in using technology creatively by making visual representations, writing their autobiography, and encouraging them to create illustrations using the technology.

2.      My lesson meets Standard 2 by introducing different technological tools and showing different ways to share work over the internet.

3.      My lesson meets Standard 3 because the students will be engaged in partner work and will be sharing and collaborating their work via Google Drive.

4.      My lesson contains all four elements of Standard 4 because I cover how to safely share work through Google Drive, allow for accommodations and/or modifications for students if needed, have a list of appropriate language and ways to interact when giving feedback on other’s work, and it has already been taught in my classroom how to be respectful and mindful of different cultures and that we are going to be learning about each other in the classroom.
